SHIFT Speaker Yoshua Bengio received Turing Award

Turing Award is named after the British mathematician Alan Turing who laid the theoretical foundations for computer science.

The 2018 Turing Award, also known as the Nobel prize of computing has been given to three researchers for innovations they have made in AI and deep learning. Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun developed techniques which underpins the current proliferation of AI technologies and the development of artificial intelligence. One could call them as pioneers or “godfathers” in deep learning and neural network development.

Their work in developing algorithms helped to identify formulas from data and to identify languages, objects, and environments. The development of deep neural networks led to breakthroughs in speech recognition, robotics, and image and video editing through machine learning.

Hear more from Yoshua Bengio at SHIFT business festival.  He is often referred to one of the father’s of artificial intelligence research. He is now best known as not only the head of the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute (Mila) – the largest academic research group on deep learning – but also the board member of the NIPS Foundation.
